Abstract
Anticholinergic drugs whitch have been used in management of irritable bowel syndrome are not satisfactory in their effect of alleviating the patient's symptoms and have some side-effects. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and
clinical
safty of fenoverine in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. This study was done with randomized, prospective, controlled and double-blind method.
Sixty patients were recruited, thirty as a treated group with fenoverine and thirty as a control group. All patients complained lower abdominal pain and loose stool frequently without ogranic diseases. treatment lasted four weeks at the dosage of
100 mg
of fenoverine T. I. D per day or placebo with meals. The resolution or attenuation of abdominal pain was considered to be the main assessment. Abdominal pain was improved in 72% of patients treated wth fenoverine but only in 34.7% of patients
treated
with placebo (p<0.05). In patients treated with fenoverine two patients (8%) experienced dry mouth and one patient experienced constipation mildly. Thus it is concluded that fenoverine is effective and safe in treating the patients with irritable
